Its all about feeling – Kanyakumari

I am fully sure that Kanyakumari must be a very special place for all the Indians.
How many places in the world offer a view of three oceans in a glance?
I don’t know the answer but Kanyakumari certainly does.
That is the only place in India where you can see the sun rising and setting in the sea. All other places on the seashore in our country offer only one view of either sunrise or the sunset happening in the sea.

Distant view of India

That is not the only unique feature of Kanyakumari.
For me the greatness of the place lies in the fact that it actually gives you a feel of standing at the feet of our great country. You have practically the whole India behind you when standing at the Triveni Sangam point and when you stand on the rock of Vivekananda Memorial you can see the vast country expanding on both the sides in front. It is interesting to see the Indian subcontinent converging into a small point where you can actually walk from Eastern border of the country to the Western border in a minute.

You have the entire India in front of you when standing at this point

There are infinite points on the border of India but they offer unidirectional view and that is where Kanyakumari stands tall.

Otherwise a small fishing town Kanyakumari has its share of big attractions as compared to its size. Sublime structures of Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Thiruvallur Statue provide a magnificent view pleasing to the eyes. Then there is Gandhi Mandapam and Kanyakumari Temples on the sea shore. You can see Kudankulam atomic plant at some distance.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial

It is said that Swami Vivekananda swam to the rock where the current memorial stands and spent three days on it doing the penance. The rock must be easily a kilometer away and tremendous courage must be needed to swim through and spend days without food and water under open sky on it.

Two sublime structures on the rocky island

The next landmass on the South after the Rock Memorial is 5000 kms away at the continent of Antarctica. Standing in the balcony at the rear of the Memorial you can imagine the vast gap between the two lands, filled up by the Indian Ocean.

The next landmass from this point – Antarctica,
vast Indian Ocean in between

The famous sunset can be seen from the Gandhi Mandapam and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial glows in the lights at dusk.

One must visit Kanyakumari to experience the feel and the breathtaking views. For those looking for peace of mind, the meditation hall in the Rock Memorial provides the feeling of divine calmness.

Feel it.
